Acupuncture is the insertion of needles into specific points on the body with the aim to treat a specific condition, relieve pain, or achieve homeostasis within the body. As is the case with human acupuncture, veterinary acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years. Veterinary acupuncture is an integral part of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, and has increased in popularity over the last few decades throughout the rest of the world, as more studies have been conducted into the scientific basis of its mechanisms of action and clinical benefits for treating a variety of conditions. Whilst acupuncture can be used as a sole therapy, it is more commonly used as part of a multi-modal approach to disease.
